Linux refers to a kernel written by Linus Torvalds, who unleashed it on the public as version 0.01 in September 1991. Linux is also used to refer to an Operating System built using the Linux Kernel and the GNU suite of free software. There are lots of different Linux distributions and I am most familiar with Debian.
