Mac OS X - Intro Notes - Back to Index

Intro

I made occasional use of a Mac back in the late 1980s but my main platform was Solaris. Since then I have worked with Irix and Solaris but never really with DOS or Windows. In the summer of 2003 when I decided to buy myself a laptop (I had never actually owned a computer before then) I considered Linux but ended up taking the path of least resistance and ordering myself an iBook. In October 2006 I replaced it with a 20" Intel iMac and I am now on my third Mac, having recently replaced that with a new 21.5" iMac.

For the early history of Mac OS X check out Amit Singh's December 2003 article A Brief History of Mac OS X. One of the first things I do after installing Mac OS X is to install Xcode so that I can then use MacPorts to install my favorite open source command line tools.
